The Climate Change Committee today (May 9th) published its review on renewable energy, labelling nuclear energy as currently ‘the most cost-effective of the carbon technologies’ and noting that ‘it should form part of the mix.’ |
NIA Chief Executive Keith Parker commented: "It is extremely positive that the Committee on Climate Change has recognised the crucial role that nuclear energy should continue to play in the UK’s energy mix if we are to meet our climate change objectives."
"We have always argued that nuclear energy is only part of the solution and agree that renewable energy must form a significant part of our energy supply in to the future. It is essential that we continue to increase our reliance on all low carbon technologies whilst delivering a reliable and cost-effective energy supply. The inclusion of nuclear in our energy future remains a sure fire way to do this."
Whilst a detailed review into impact of events in Japan on the UK was not undertaken, the Committee states that the conclusions of the 2008 White Paper on Nuclear Safety are likely to be ‘robust’ to events in Japan.
