Nuclear leadership and governance for senior managers facing
nuclear industry change
Laying the foundations for nuclear industry change to realise UK energy goals.

Course Aims

The nuclear industry is rising to the challenge of transforming itself to provide safe, secure and reliable nuclear generated electricity for the UK public. Changes are being shaped by Government energy policy, technology availability and city financing of complex multi-billion pound projects. For the nuclear supply chain understanding technology, commercial and political risks will be a prerequisite for successful investment. Senior managers lead on these changes and provide pathways for their companies to take.
This short course has been developed specifically for senior managers operating, or planning to operate, in the UK nuclear industry. It will provide them with understanding on the key factors for successful operation and will do this by focusing on the interrelation between critical elements such as finance, risk, and nuclear good practice. Participants will learn about the context of the technology, lessons learnt from the past and essential nuclear requirements such as safety, security, waste management and concern for the environment.
A blend of instructional and experiential activities will assist senior managers to grasp and deal with the key issues provoked by rapid nuclear change and help put them in the context of their company. In learning about their role as leaders in this nuclear renaissance, they will be able to understand nuclear governance of complex technology in a strictly regulated regime that is closely scrutinised by politicians, the public and the media. Through interactive working they will gain new insights within the context of their company’s business that will empower them to manage the changes required within the work place.

Personnel to benefit from the courses will come from;

  • Nuclear companies seeking to broaden nuclear understanding
  • New companies entering the nuclear industry especially for New Build
  • Finance, Legal and Insurance sectors wanting to raise nuclear awareness
  • Government departments and Agencies working on energy or regulation

Course Organisation

This course is organised by The University of Manchester working in partnership with the International Nuclear Academy. All the speakers will be senior representatives for the French and UK nuclear industries, The Manchester Business School and the Dalton Nuclear Institute at The University of Manchester.
